Mr Gordon's News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We continue to keep Sonya and her family close and in our prayers after the sudden loss of her beautiful David last week.

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held on Saturday 27 June at 9:30am in our school hall, followed by a light morning tea. Our P&F Committee has kindly offered their support with the morning tea refreshments. If you are able to contribute a plate of nibbles to share on the day, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who has offered their prayers, support, and kind messages during this difficult time. Your compassion and care are greatly appreciated by Sonya and her family.

Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) plus the P&F Association

On Monday night the CSAC met in the staffroom, led by Chair, Nicolene Valentgoed as we discussed all things OLSOTS. I value the contribution these parent representatives are making to the leadership of the school and look forward to working closely with them as we prepare for 2027 and beyond in terms of vision, policy, pastoral care, and budgets.  Thanks to Genevieve Hull (Secretary), Anna Holt (Treasurer), and Britany Norton (Vice Chair) for taking on these extra responsibilities this year.

At the meeting, I was anxious to share my appreciation for the other parent group here, the P&F that is led so capably by Tash McCarthy and her key team; they seem to have no end of energy and ideas to add value for this community. Just this term we have enjoyed the Welcome Coffee event, and I know the students are excited about the upcoming Disco.

Staff News

It is with sadness that I share that we will be saying goodbye to Deb Sanger, our wonderful Science teacher, after sharing a heartfelt family decision to move to Scadden next term. We are sincerely grateful for Deb’s caring and expert work with our students, and we wish her every success and happiness in the future.

We are pleased to welcome Fiona Ryan into the role. While many know Fiona as our incredibly talented Dance teacher, some may be surprised to learn that she also has a passion for science and holds a Medical Science degree in Microbiology. Fiona brings genuine enthusiasm to this area, and I am sure she will inspire our students and foster a love of science while helping them better understand the world around them.

It has been no secret that our dedicated and hard-working Assistant Principal, Lorna Russell, is taking a well-earned break in 2027, and ‘Yes’ she is coming back! I have called for Expressions of Interest from the staff to fill this role and I am looking forward to sharing news about that in the near future.

Our Year 1 teacher, Erin Tyrell will be taking 5 weeks long service leave at the beginning of Term 3 and we are delighted for her to adventure away and refresh then. We feel lucky to have Maggie Cairnduff joining us ‘on loan’ from St Bernadette’s, Port Kennedy. Maggie has been here before having spent 10 weeks as a prac teacher with Mrs Connolly, so she knows the school already and she has family in Esperance to stay with.

Reports: The teachers are busy preparing Reports for the first semester so share a smile if they are looking a bit worn down right now!

Prayer Assembly by Pre-Primary last Friday was an energetic and thought-provoking time by some of our youngest students and it was terrific to see so many parents, grandparents and friends joining us in the hall. Thanks to Mrs Connolly for preparing the class and for helping us all appreciate just how special each one of us is.

CatholicCare

As part of our school feast day the students had the opportunity to come in casual dress for the day. We raised $191 for CatholicCare, thank you!

Grandparents Mass

The Year Three/Four class will be leading our school in a special Grandparents Mass during Week Two of next term. We warmly invite all parents and grandparents to join us for this celebration on Monday 27 July at 9:00am, followed by morning tea in the hall and classroom visits with their grandchildren.

Sacramental Program

As part of the Sacramental program for the children who will be receiving Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Conformation this year, there are some important family meetings with Fr Marek. Parents and Caregivers of sacramental students are asked to attend the Sunday Mass on 21 June, where Fr Marek will discuss with the families how to best prepare their children to receive the sacraments. Please keep the children who will be receiving a sacrament this year in your prayers.

The Sacramental Workshop run by Mildred Rego will be in Term Three, Tuesday 18 September.

School Reports

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S REPORT

Parents will receive two formal academic reports this year – a Mid-Year Report at the end of Term Two and an End of Year Report at the end of Term Four.

MID-YEAR REPORT

This report provides parents with an indication of how their child is progressing in relation to the end of year Achievement Standard for each learning area for their year level. The grade provided is based on the curriculum which has been taught and assessed to that point in time.

END OF YEAR REPORT

This report provides parents with an overview of how their child has progressed, across the entire year, in relation to the end of year Achievement Standard for each learning area for their year level. The grade provided is based on the curriculum which has been taught and assessed across the entire year, not just Semester Two.

Understanding the Grading System – Pre-Primary

ACHIEVEMENT DESCRIPTORS

  • The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  • The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  •  The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  •  The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  •  The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.

The descriptors summarise the standard (or quality) of achievement associated with each level. The scale describes the depth of knowledge and understanding and the range of skills that students typically show.

Maintaining a level in a learning area from one semester to the next is an indication of positive achievement and expected development.

A child who is on an Individual Education Plan will have progress reported against learning outcomes outlined in the Individual Education Plan.

Understanding the Grading System – Years 1 – 6

GRADE DESCRIPTION

  • A The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  • B The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  • C The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  • D The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
  • E The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.

The A – E grade scale summarises the standard of achievement associated with each learning area. The scale describes the depth of knowledge, understandings and skills that children working at that standard typically show. If your child receives a ‘C’ grade, they are achieving at the required level for their year.

Maintaining a grade in a learning area from one semester to the next is an indication of positive achievement and expected development.

A child who is on an Individual Education Plan will have progress reported against learning outcomes outlined in the Individual Education Plan – not using A-E grades.

A child who is on an English as an Additional Language or Dialect learning plan (EAL/D) will have progress reported against learning outcomes outlined in their plan- not using A-E grades.

Is a ‘C’ grade good?

Yes, you should celebrate C grades as this indicates that your child has progressed to the desired level of understanding for his/her year level.

Is a ‘C’ grade just a pass like when I was at school

No, a C grade today, is the expected Achievement Standard for each year level and each learning area.

Does an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade mean my child is working a year or two above their current grade?

No, an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade means that your child is responding to the content taught to a deeper level. They may be thinking more critically about the content, which is a wonderful skill to demonstrate.

How are final grades determined?

Teachers collect numerous samples of work and assessments to determine the final grade. The grade is determined with the use of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s (SCSA) Judging Standards. For more information on this go to SCSA Reporting information.

We hope this information assists you to understand the reporting process at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher.

SEQTA Engage Reports

Parents new to our school will receive a welcome email inviting you to create a login to SEQTA Engage.  Please check your Junk/Spam emails. Once you have created your login and password you will have access to SEQTA Engage.  For parents and caregivers who are already connected to SEQTA Engage and may require assistance with access please refer to our school website for troubleshooting, SEQTA Engage.

On Friday 3 July the school reports will be available for you to view through SEQTA Engage. Please ensure you have followed the steps to login to your SEQTA account, or you will be unable to view your child’s report. We encourage parents to download a copy of their child’s report for future reference.

NCCD

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection) is an annual collection that counts the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability and the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.  For more information regarding the NCCD data follow the link below.

FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND CARERS

Year Five/Six

Our Year Three – Six students have been hard at work on an exciting integrated project that combines creativity, measurement skills, and design thinking. Their challenge is to design a brand-new playground/skatepark for the Walker Street oval. Using digital tools, students are planning and visualising their ideas before bringing them to life through carefully constructed scale models. Inclusivity is a key focus, with one piece of equipment requiring wheel-chair access. Throughout the project, students are developing problem-solving skills, collaboration, and an understanding of real-world design processes. It has been wonderful to see their imagination and innovation shine as they work towards their final creations. We can’t wait to showcase their fantastic models soon!

Year One

In Year One we have been learning to identify the characteristics of 2 dimensional shapes. We created shape robots and used our understanding to tally up the total number of curved shapes vs those with parallel lines.

Pre-Kindy

Pre-Kindy is always a hive of activity. Both of our classes have been enjoying our Investigation Time especially our new blocks and the inclusion of beads for threading and building our fine motor skills. We have finished up lots of fun learning about shapes and are starting to explore patterns during our Maths sessions. The Tuesday class have loved listening to Jolly Olly Octopus with Mrs Crane which has inspired our ocean exploration during Talking Time in the afternoons. Finally, we finish every day with music and dance and are making LOTS of noise as we use the drums.

URSTRONG: Spirit of Friendship Day

URSTRONG MONTHLY THEME: Trust

💙June’s Wellbeing Theme: TRUST! 💜
Did you know that Friendship Fact #3 teaches us that Trust & Respect are the two most important qualities of a friendship?
When someone says, “I’ve got your back!” in kid-lingo, they don’t mean they’re literally holding your back!
It means:
🧡They’re there for you when you need them.
💛They keep their promises.
💚 Their words are honest.
💙They do what they say they’re going to do.
💜You can count on them.
Trust is built one small action at a time. Every kept promise, every act of honesty, and every moment of showing up for a friend helps strengthen the friendship.

P & F News

SCHOOL DISCO

Our School Disco is coming up on Wednesday and we can’t wait to see the students hit the dance floor! With DJ Jake Meadley bringing the tunes, a sausage sizzle, prizes, dancing and plenty of fun planned, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic afternoon and evening for our school community.

Full event details, including times and supervision information, have been shared via Seesaw and class chat groups.

The P&F absolutely loves creating opportunities like this for our students and families. Events such as the disco are a wonderful way to build connections, strengthen our school community and create fun memories for the kids.

We already have a fantastic group of volunteers helping out on the night, but would happily welcome a few more helping hands. If you’d be interested in assisting in any way, please get in touch — we’d love to hear from you!

We’re looking forward to a fun-filled night and hope to see lots of students and families there!

We would appreciate families bringing cash on the day for the $5 entry fee.

Catholic School Parents WA invites all members to play an active part in guiding our work by submitting any motions for consideration at the upcoming AGM on 23rd  June 2026. We also encourage you to consider nominating for the CSPWA Board, or perhaps to nominate someone whose commitment and perspective would strengthen our mission of supporting families in Catholic education across Western Australia. Your involvement ensures our parent voice remains strong, representative, and future‑focused.
